A Note

Ten years ago, when I first began teaching, Character Education was starting to make inroads into the curriculum. The value of explicitly teaching important qualities and traits that are admired by the population was becoming more apparent. For students to learn the behaviour, not only did we have to model and live the behaviour, we also had to talk about it.

This is where the idea of mixing my love of reading biographies of famous people and specific traits came to fruition. This, I thought, was a great way to get the message across while learning through examples from real life people and situations.

When my daughter was born, I very quickly became aware of a reading gap in early childhood literacy options, most notably in the board book category. It seems that they go from simplistic board books to rather large complex picture books. Then, the jump from picture books to the next level, novels, is even more devastating for some hesitant readers, making it hard for students to keep pace.

To solve the gap in board books to pictures books, I did plenty of research and reflected back on my own professional development. The solution was rather simple; create more complex board books that introduce the basic elements of a story, including character and plot development, theme, types of conflict etc. This would be the foundation of the BittyBio series I set out to develop.

I was further interested in creating more complex board books to really challenge my daughter's imagination and speech. Infants can communicate much better than we know and their understanding of words and stories is beyond what we can grasp, or understand through research and testing.

I set out to create a new standard of board book, one that challenged the norms and pushed the limits of what is expected for board books. As a result, I had to break the traditional rules of publishing and carve out a niche that I hope you can enjoy, share and welcome into your family library.

BittyBio has been a long time coming and I truly hope the concept of setting the bar higher takes off and that other authors join in and begin to really challenge even the youngest minds.
