Fake Reading

Why do children fake read? The answer isn’t some complicated obscurity, more often than not, the child simply has not found a subject matter they are interested in. Reading is a very personal choice, and limiting a person’s ability to choose their preferred topic, limits their ability to enjoy reading it. This notion of limited choice happens all too often in school.

Reading is important to child development. It helps expand their knowledge, improve their spelling, foster creativity and gives them the skills to be successful in life. The approach and understanding of books by both adults and children is important to promote a love of books. Unfortunately, sometimes you may find that your kids are not really reading, but instead, they are fake reading. Children do this for a number of reasons and it is usually a defence mechanism that they have been honing for years as a reluctant reader. The question is, do they truly not enjoy reading at all?

As a parent or teacher, it is important to ensure that your children are actually comprehending the material they are reading. If a child is fake reading, you need to intervene and guide them early on. Make a plan to develop good reading habits and then give them the opportunity to practice.

You will know if a child is fake reading by observing their behavior and mannerisms. Keep an eye out for the following signs that your child is fake reading:

  • Day dreaming or staring into space instead of focusing on the book.
  • Moving around excessively during reading time.
  • Making attention seeking noises.
  • Disturbing others around them.
  • Not being able to speak freely about the content or characters within the book.
  • Slow page turning, rhythmic page turning or turning the pages too quickly.
  • Uncomfortable posture.
  • Changes to another book too fast.
  • Considers reading books that you find boring.
  • Pretend to fall asleep or actually fall asleep while reading.
  • Do not take care of their books and they end up getting torn or misplaced.

This behavior is in contrast to when the children are really engaged in their reading. Real readers are always focused on their books and they do not stare at the pages. They go through each page as they take their time to enjoy what they are reading without disturbing others. They stay in one place while focusing on their reading and they read each word carefully. If you inquire about what they are reading, they can talk about it because they understand what they have read. These children take time to read one book fully before going on to the next. They take care of their books and they think they are fun to explore.

Everyone knows that reading is important and if a child can read well it greatly increases their chances of being successful in school and in life. Remember that reading isn’t only about decoding words. Ensure that your child is actually understanding the material and take opportunities to go beyond the text and make personal connections that you can share with your tiny reader.
