"Letting your child lead is a wise way to start"

Below is a handy acronym to use when communicating with your child. It is a widely used strategy for helping with children's communication development.

O - Observe

W - Wait

L - Listen

Observe

Observe you child’s body language, including their actions, gestures and expressions. Figuring out what has captured your child’s imagination will help you share the moment.

Wait

Stop talking, lean forward and look at your child expectantly to help engage your child and let them know that you are awaiting a response.

Listen

Let your child finish what they are saying and do not interrupt, this will help your child build confidence and self-esteem. It also shows your child that they are important.

Children communicate in many different ways from gesturing and pointing to gazing, facial expression and actual talking. At each level of development you should employ OWL and figure out what your child is actually “telling” you.
