Developing Language

Reading aloud helps to build awareness of words and sounds, which predicts future success in reading. When a child develops reading skills early in life, it helps them become better readers later on. Children who do not develop early reading skills have fewer opportunities of practicing reading and in turn do not attain the required levels of fluency in reading when entering school.

Stimulate Cognitive Skills

Reading aloud helps to stimulate language in young children even before they start to talk. The children also develop curiosity, motivation and memory. According to research, the more words a parent uses to speak to an infant of eight months, the more the vocabulary a child develops when they are 20 months. There is a twelve month revolving correlation between acquisition and usage.

First Years

The happenings during the first few years of a child are crucial in determining the rest of their life. It plays a factor in determining whether a child will have a strong life later. Reading aloud helps to establish a reading foundation and success in school. If a child is having reading difficulties, it has a negative impact on their success in school.

Model and Practice Reading Aloud

It is not only important for children to be read aloud to, it is also important to encourage them to read out loud on their own. This is because reading out loud enhances fluency of the reader. The child learns to recognize words automatically and becomes more accurate in their reading. When children are read aloud to in their early years, they are exposed to print and story knowledge, including plot, theme and rare words that are not often used in daily conversations. They also continue to develop their listening skills, which is crucial for success all throughout life.
